The supplement arrives in the mail without any fanfare soon after I send cash to the person whose name and contact information I no longer have in my possession, as per the somewhat paranoid agreement I had to strike before its mysterious supplier agreed to complete the transaction.

It’s in a dark green bottle with a simple black and white label. No skull. No crossbones. I double-check.

And yet despite the lack of any obvious labeling to indicate that I’m handling a poison, I must confess that I’m afraid of the contents of the bottle. My hand tingles whenever I pick it up. Then again, my hand tingles whenever I touch just about anything these days, so that’s not really saying much.

I can’t help wondering if I’m doing something suicidal. I wouldn’t even consider knocking back bleach or scarfing down Drano, so then why in God’s name am I contemplating ingesting a textile bleaching agent? I mean, I know why I’m contemplating it. I’m trapped. I’m like a kidnap victim in the trunk of a car and I feel compelled to do everything in my power to escape my present predicament regardless of the price I may ultimately pay for that attempt. That’s what I tell myself, anyway.

But am I willing to pay for it with my life?

I hesitate before answering.

I hesitate instead of answering.

Clearly I need to put more thought into this.
